How to access the IMAGE LIST screen

This screen can be accessed in one of the following two ways:
Method 1:
  • Power on the PCE system without any HuCards in the card slot
  • Select the IMAGE LIST option at the bottom of the main system menu
Method 2:
  • Power off the system while in the IMAGE LIST screen, or load any game from the menu
  • Power on the PCE system again (in this case, the IMAGE LIST menu will appear even if there is a HuCard in the system)

MENU LAYOUT

ROM image (R) that is compatible with either UGX-01 or UGX-02 (*1)
ROM image (R) that is only compatible with the UGX-02 (*1)
ROM + RAM card image (Rr) that is only compatible with the UGX-02
ROM image (Rx) that is NOT compatible with either UGX-01 or UGX-02 (*1, *2)
  Disc Image (D) (*1)
 Disc Image +Unswappable Disc attribute (Dr)
(*1) These icons are no attribute for the system. User can choose free.
(*2) User cannot choose the color of ROM image (it's depended by the capacity)

CONTROLLER FUNCTIONS

Up/Down: Move the Cursor

Pressing Up and Down on the D-pad moves the cursor in the same direction.

Left/Right: Change the Page

Pressing Left and Right on the D-pad cycles between pages. Each block contains up to 100 images, and the images in the block are divided into 6 pages consisting of 17 items each.
When cycling past the last page of a block, it will automatically load the first page of the next block.

II Button: Switch to Settings Menu

Pressing the II button on the controller switches back to the main system menu screen. When re-inserting the Memory Card, switch back to the main menu and then open the IMAGE LIST menu again to reload the contents of the Memory Card.

I Button: Select System Card (ROM Image)

Pressing the I button on the controller selects and de-selects ROM images (if no ROM HuCard is in the system).
When selecting a ROM image, a yellow "P" icon will appear.

RUN Button: Load

Pressing the Run button on the controller loads the selected software. If something goes wrong during the loading process, an error message will appear on the bottom of the screen and the software won't start.

SELECT Button: Switch Audio Disc mode

PRIOR TO LOADING AN IMAGE

In the case of ROM images:

  1. Make sure the HuCard slot on the PCE is empty prior to powering on the system.
  2. Move the yellow cursor to the desired ROM image and press the Run button.
If you try to load a ROM image this way while a HuCard is in the system, you'll get an error and the image won't load.
ROM images can only be loaded if the total (ROM+RAM) capacity required by the image is less than the total RAM capacity available in the UGX.
For the UGX-01, the total RAM capacity is 256kb
For the UGX-02, the total RAM capacity is 512kb

In the case of CD images using an actual HuCard (other than Arcade Card DUO):

  1. Insert the corresponding HuCard and turn on the PCE system.
  2. Move the yellow cursor to the desired CD image and press the Run button.
The inserted HuCard is displayed as one of the following:
  • SUPER SYSTEM CARD
  • ARCADE CARD PRO
  • ARCADE CARD DUO
  • System Card (version 1, version 2) → ROMCARD
  • Games Express CD CARD (both types) → ROMCARD
  • Any other HuCards → ROMCARD
  • Bad Connection

Selecting both a ROM Image and a CD Image

  1. Turn the power on either with no HuCard in the system or with an Arcade Card DUO in the system.
  2. Move the yellow cursor to the desired ROM image and press the I button, a yellow "P" icon will then appear. The yellow "P" icon can only be toggled with the I button.
  3. Move the yellow cursor to the desired CD image and press the RUN button to activate both of the selected images.
  • When using the UGX-01, CD software cannot be loaded this way due to the limited amount of internal RAM.
  • When using the UGX-02, there is no limit to the ROM+CD image combinations that can be selected.

Other Information

Prior to loading, which type of media an image actually represents (either ROM or CD) is determined the moment the RUN button is pressed.
It will fail to load if the unit is unable to determine which type of media the image actually is.

How to display the names of images:

If you're using UperGrafx Control Panel version 1.5 or 1.6, please update to the latest version.
If you're using UperGrafx Control Panel version 1.7 or later, updating any information on the memory card will allow names to be displayed. Performing any one of these operations is enough: renaming an image, adding an image, deleting an image, etc.
The names database on the memory card will automatically be generated.

Description of name display screen:

  • The PC generates image data for the PCE from a data string.
  • The contents of a data string are displayed on a single 312 x 12 pixel line.
  • A single full-width character is 12 pixels wide, a half-width character is 6 pixels wide.
  • Only ASCII and JIS X 0208 characters can be displayed.
  • Non-standard characters cannot be displayed, and an error occurs if any are present. (data on the memory card is saved as UTF-8, but it cannot be displayed if it isn't compatible with JIS X 0208)
  • Foreign languages which consist of characters that aren't included in JIS X 0208 cannot be displayed. (Kanji characters that are the same as the ones in Japanese can be displayed)
  • Characters specific to a certain OS are automatically replaced with upper-case Roman alphabet characters (I, II, III), and other characters (①,②,③,㍑) cannot be displayed.
  • The font used is: M+ gothic 12r
  • When no CD images are present, a number inside a pair of brackets will be displayed instead, for example [30]
  • The ability to select an empty image number is possible, but won't cause any issues. If a number that contains no image is selected, the system will return to image #0.
